Membership Commitment
Having been brought by God's grace to repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and having been led by the Holy Spirit to join together as members of Sovereign Grace Church, we do joyfully and willingly make the following commitments.
By the grace of God…
1. We will live our lives together under the supreme authority of the Bible, and we will order our lives together around the central theme of Scripture: the gospel of Jesus Christ.
(2 Timothy 3:16-17; 1 Corinthians 15:3)
2. We will live together in love, pursuing relationships with one another, praying for one another, rejoicing
in one another’s happiness, and bearing one another’s burdens.
(John 13:34; Romans 12:15; James 5:16)
3. We will not neglect to meet together on the Lord’s Day, in small group fellowship, and through the various opportunities our church provides.
(Hebrews 10:24-25; Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 12:14-20)
4. We will seek, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to progressively grow in grace and holiness through Scripture, sacraments, fellowship, and other means of grace.
(2 Peter 3:18; 2 Corinthians 3:18; 1 Corinthians 10:16; 1 Peter 3:21)
5. We will seek to live carefully, not gratifying sinful desires and not loving the world, but through our lives provide a compelling picture of God's saving power to all who see us.
(1 John 2:15-17; James 4:4; Matthew 5:14-16; Galatians 5:16)
6. We will proclaim the gospel through the opportunities God provides in our homes, schools, workplaces, and community, and we will support Sovereign Grace Ministries and those whom the church sends to proclaim the gospel beyond our community.
(Isaiah 45:22; Romans 10:14-15; 2 Thessalonians 3:1; 2 Corinthians 8:13-15)
7. We will work together to build up the ministry of this church, contributing cheerfully and faithfully of our time, talents, spiritual gifts, and money.
(1 Peter 4:10; 2 Corinthians 9:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:7)
8. We will promote marriage as a reflection of Christ’s relationship with the church, and, as parents, we will bring up our children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. We support the church’s understanding of the Bible’s teaching on marriage, divorce, and remarriage.
(Genesis 2:4-25; Ephesians 5:22-33; Matthew 19:3-9; Ephesians 6:1-4; Deuteronomy 6:1-9)
9. We will work and pray for the unity of the Spirit, pursuing reconciliation when offended, resisting opportunities for gossip or slander, and welcoming others who come to correct us.
(Ephesians 4:1-3; Proverbs 17:9; Galatians 6:1; Matthew 18:21-22)
10. We will exercise affectionate care and watchfulness over each other, gently restoring anyone whose practice of sin requires it, and supporting the efforts of the church and its leaders to restore straying members through corrective discipline. We agree with the church’s statement on church discipline.
(Hebrews 12:3-17; Galatians 6:1-2; Matthew 18:15-20; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13; Proverbs 27:6)
11. We will, if we leave this church, as soon as possible unite with another church where we can carry out the spirit of this Commitment, so fulfilling our desire to always be an active part of God's church until we die.
(Hebrews 10:24-25; Ephesians 4:16; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; 1 Peter 2:5)
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen.
